In 1937, a committee of the American Association of University Women, led by Ms. Mary O. Cowper, determined that “a priority of Durham should be to care for preschool children of working mothers.” In 1938, representatives of twenty-five civic organizations formed the Durham Nursery School Association, Inc (DNSA). Thirty-five children were enrolled in a cottage on the corner of Main St. and Coley St. DNSA became a member of the community chest and was allocated $500.00.

In 1944, DNSA administered federal Lanham Act funds to operate four white and three black schools. In 1946, several of the schools were closed when the Lanham Act expired. In 1958, DNSA operated two schools, Southside Nursery and F.A.G. Cowper School. Southside was a new building constructed with funds donated by Doris Duke.

In 1972, DNSA began receiving North Department of Social Services federal funds. Centers were opened at St. Phillips Episcopal Church and at Pilgrim United Church of Christ. In 1975, a center was opened at Watts Street Baptist Church. In 1976, St. Phillips moved to Lyon Park School. In 1978, DNSA received recognition by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction as a certified kindergarten.

In 1983, Lyon Park School relocated to Riddle Rd. DNAP purchased the center on Riddle Rd. in 1985 and sold it in 1988. Since that time, DNAP has operated two centers: one at Pilgrim United Church of Christ and one at Watts Street Baptist Church. In 1991, DNAP opened an infant room at the Pilgrim Center. On November 1, 2009 DNAP closed the Watts center.
